Below are the authoritative terminology standards and the legal compliance matrix utilized by manufacturers, legal counsel, and retail enterprises across Canada.

SECTION 1: APPROVED INDUSTRY DEFINITIONS & TECHNICAL STANDARDS

To maintain transparent trade protocols, the CKTI establishes the following manufacturing and engineering definitions. These standards align with global manufacturing criteria and distinguish standard, lawful edge tools from prohibited mechanisms.

1. Manual Folding Knife

A folding knife possesses a blade that is contained within the handle when closed. It requires the user to exert continuous physical contact with the blade or an attached deployment aid to rotate the blade around a fixed pivot point into the fully open, locked position.

2. Blade Retention Device (Detent)

A mechanical design feature—typically consisting of a spring-loaded ball bearing resting in a machined recess on the blade tang—engineered to provide a specific, measurable resistance (bias) that securely holds the blade in the closed position within the handle. This device prevents accidental deployment and requires deliberate physical force from the user’s hand to overcome the initial resistance before manual opening can occur.

3. One-Handed Opening Aids & Modern Locks

Mechanical features and locking interfaces integrated into the design of a manual folding knife to facilitate ergonomic, one-handed operation by the user. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Flipper Tab (Standard, Front, or Top): A small protrusion extending from the blade tang. A standard flipper extends from the bottom spine, while front and top flippers sit subtly on the upper crown of the tang. All variations require sequential finger traction to break the detent resistance and manually rotate the blade open.
  • Low-Profile / Flush Flipper Tabs: A refined variation where the front or top flipper tab is engineered to sit flush with the handle geometry or spine profile when closed. These designs eliminate pocket-snagging, enhance safety during transport, and strictly require a deliberate, continuous manual sweeping motion by the operator's digit to deploy the blade.

  • Crossbar Lock: An internal locking mechanism utilizing a spring-loaded steel bar moving back and forth within a machined slot in the handle liners to lock the blade open.

Technical Note on Crossbar Locks: The dual springs inside a crossbar lock mechanism are engineered strictly to provide a closing bias that retains the blade securely in the handle when folded, and to mechanically lock the tang when open. They do not propel, bias, or drive the blade outward. To deploy the blade, the user must manually overcome the internal safety bias using an opening aid, or intentionally disengage the locking bar to manually rotate the blade.

4. Centrifugal vs. Manual Pivot Mechanics

  • True Centrifugal/Gravity Knife: A knife engineered without a blade retention device (detent or lock-bias), allowing the blade to slide or swing freely from the handle solely by the force of gravity or a release switch.
  • Modern Manual Pivot: A tool engineered with a precise, low-friction pivot system (using washers or ball bearings) to reduce mechanical wear and ensure tool longevity. The reduction of friction is a standard manufacturing refinement. Even if a knife opens smoothly when a crossbar lock is disengaged, it does not legally reclassify a manual tool into a centrifugal weapon, provided a functional detent or closing bias is present when the knife is at rest.
